About.

I got my first camera when I was seven or eight, and I’ve had one with me ever since. I started on film and moved to digital. Photography is how I spend time in the natural world, and how I show other people the way I see it. I can’t paint, and I don’t make films. This is how I tell the story.

I keep going back to wild coasts, high country and cold places, and to the light at either end of the day.

Stuart Derman is a photographer based in Salt Lake City. He is the founder of Wasatch Mountain Arts, a nonprofit that supports the film community, and runs the Wasatch Mountain Film Festival. Away from the camera, he builds and runs companies. That side of his work lives at stuartderman.com .
In the field

On deck in Svalbard with the long lens. Every frame in Arctic wildlife was made at 400 mm or longer, far enough back that the animals carry on as they were.
