A week in Svalbard in May 2024, when the sun never sets. Snow-covered mountain faces and glacier fronts, Arctic fox kits, walruses on the beach, a whale at the surface and terns resting on floating ice, along with the ships and sleds people rely on this far north. All of it made with long lenses, from a distance.

The light

The sun never set.

In mid-May at 81° N the sun circles the sky all day and night. It climbs to about 27° at midday and drops to about 9° around midnight, so the light stays low and raking at every hour. Back home in Salt Lake City, the same day runs from night to a midday sun at 67° and back.

Shoulder to shoulder was made at 10:08 p.m. and Past midnight at 12:23 a.m., with the sun still up. Each ring on the chart is one of the photographs here, placed at the hour it was made.
